Welcome to But Why Tho? the podcast, where we talk about the parts of popular culture that people say matter and ask the question but why tho?

Kate, Adrian, and Matt answer this question with through passion, geekdom, history and even some scholarship.

Apr 26, 2017

In honor of International Alien day, Ryan takes the crew through his favorite movie franchise of all time: Alien. We explore the history behind the storytelling and production of the films and ultimately spend most of the time about how Ellen Ripley goes down in the history of science fiction and action movies as a complete badass. We talk about how Sigourney Weaver blew away her male competition for the role and how she became the most vital part of the franchise in spite of almost being written out multiple times. We talk about Ridley Scott intentionally creating intense environments on the set for the first film, in order to make the audience feel unsettles, and yes, we talk about how David Fincher has disowned his part in the franchise. We go into the symbolism of the movies, the fight scenes of the movies, and ultimately end up asking the question: was Alien Vs. Predator really that bad?

So place your order for some bug stompers (assuming you wear men's shoes), pop in the quadrilogy, and get ready for episode 14.

This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.

*Also yes, Kate got the Covenant release day wrong, she's very sorry*
