Welcome to But Why Tho? the podcast, where we talk about the parts of popular culture that people say matter and ask the question but why tho?

Kate, Adrian, and Matt answer this question with through passion, geekdom, history and even some scholarship.

Mar 22, 2017

From the arcade to the console, Mortal Kombat had wide appeal to gamers and with 20 games and more coming out, it's still loved today. But why do we still play it? Why is the theme song so damn catchy? Why is there a quote about Mortal Kombat from Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan?

In this episode we talk about why Mortal Kombat matters. Tom brings us through the developer history, including the graphics, the character design, and the lore of the Mortal Kombat Universe. We have feelings about the first live-action, the song, the fatalities. We also talk about one of the most important cultural impacts the fighting game had: the debate about violence in video games.

And then we bring it all back home, since we have Mortal Tombat. We go into how he got started playing MK2 and how he got started going on win-streaks.

We also have a very special announcement at the beginning of the show, as we welcome Ryan (our guest on our PAX and X-Men episodes) to a more permanent position with our podcast crew.
